Kleptomania

Take a moment to think about the best period in your life so far. I am not talking about moments, but a period of life which you feel, you were generally happy.

My guess is, that barring childhood of course, it would have been a period where you were most busy. Busy doing work maybe, busy organizing things, busy managing people in your life, or anything else for that matter. But it would never be the period when you have had nothing to do.

And believe me I am not saying that you were happy because you were so busy, all I am saying is that you were happy because maybe, just maybe, you could steal time. Steal time to do things you could not manage to do while you were busy. Something you wanted to do but never could afford to because of the time constraints and leading you to steal time from whatever that was keeping you busy and being happy for a while.

Atleast I remember my best times in life, have not been when I had nothing to do. They in fact have been the worst to be honest. I think I have enjoyed the most when I stole sometime off the clock and done something worthwhile. Going for a non-scheduled trip, meeting new and interesting people while going around the city looking for sponsorships, doing ten things at one time and still stealing time from all of it to go out with friends. Its never been as fun when I was just sitting in my room and someone took me to a place that I really remember.

But it poses an interesting question: would I have had as much fun at all the stuff that I remember now, had I been free during that period?

I think not.

I think that we, as people, have this general tendency of being kleptomaniacs who want to steal time and do something different from what we are already busy with. I think that the enjoyment sort of increases when you are busy and that one would not enjoy even the most fun thing in the world if the person had nothing else to do in life besides being there. Also, the periods in life, where I have had nothing to do, have been like a dull blotch in my memory. Although when I am busy, I always think about how and when would I get free, but when I get free, I can never think of fun stuff to do. Its like when you have the exam the next day, your mind would think of the most brilliant plans, and before you can even walk out of the examination hall the next day, your brain is stripped out of the interesting ideas and left with the most boring and mundane ones.

The people around me, who I envy/admire the most, are the people who find time for everything. They steal time from their busy life and do something that I would have loved to do. I always admire their knack of being successful at what they are doing and also finding time for what they want to do in life. Their success, I think, lies in not doing what they are busy with brilliantly (heck, everybody is brilliant at what they do these days), but in managing to steal away time from those things and actually implement those plans that they think of when they are busy.

So the lesson my friend (Oh! there is a lesson too, you ask!!) is keep yourself busy. Do not aim for a life where you have nothing to do, instead look for things that will make you busy and test you. And if you are already busy, then make sure that you steal time to do the things that you want to do. Because only that, would truly make you happy, for there is no fun in being free when you were not busy anyways.

China Chronicles

My nervousness over the complete lack of preparation before landing in China was given some relief when I met Sanket, my roommate in Ann Arbor and in Shanghai, on the plane. We were lucky enough to have met some current students from CEIBS who were also coming back from India and were kind enough to make sure we reached the campus safely. From there on out, it was a completely awesome experiences where I learnt about China, its people, its economy and most of all, had fun just being there. Here I am trying to capture some key fun facts I learnt on my way: 1. Everyone in China uses WeChat! Me and Sanket, unlike most exchange students at CEIBS had decided to stay on the campus to make the logistics easier and to reflect our complete lack of preparation. It was not that we had not tried to find accommodation in Puxi (the more happening part of the city) but just that sitting in Michigan it was very hard for us to trust something which we could not understand in Chinese. Reaching la...

To be or not to be

I have always wondered about myself, if engineering was the right path for me or would I have been happier and more satisfied being a DU student. There are several reasons why this question surfaces again and again, and for no good reason rattles me by painting a very different "what-if" kind of picture. One of the first reason is my current job and the people I meet in my company. If there is anything I like about my present organisation is that it is so diverse and full of so many kinds of people, that one ends up getting exposed to new perspectives on a continuous basis. In my student life, my perspectives however rich or 'bright' were more or less similar from what I would get from the very next person on the campus. In my office however, there is such multiplicity of opinion, such range of thought and thought processes, such diversity in analyzing a problem, that one truly ponders as to which side I belong to. If it is to be believed that all wisdom is nothi...

Bleeding

"There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.”  --Ernest Hemingway One was to imagine that if one is good with one's intentions, good stuff will happen. One is truly amazed on how something immaterial to one can still pain so much. One is always sure about the trivial things in life, but so confused when something important comes up, that one lets the people who should matter get away in search and hope for people who should not matter. One can think about the past and still think that maybe its karma. Maybe, the bad stuff does come to bite you in the ass after a while. One can relate to the pain one has given, one can feel how it must have felt, even though one was clear this may happen. One feels humbled about the past and unsure about the future. One does not know the direction which one is headed to, neither the path one is going to take to get there. One simply decides to twirl and spin until one is blind to any sense of direction, ...
