Kleptomania

Take a moment to think about the best period in your life so far. I am not talking about moments, but a period of life which you feel, you were generally happy.

My guess is, that barring childhood of course, it would have been a period where you were most busy. Busy doing work maybe, busy organizing things, busy managing people in your life, or anything else for that matter. But it would never be the period when you have had nothing to do.

And believe me I am not saying that you were happy because you were so busy, all I am saying is that you were happy because maybe, just maybe, you could steal time. Steal time to do things you could not manage to do while you were busy. Something you wanted to do but never could afford to because of the time constraints and leading you to steal time from whatever that was keeping you busy and being happy for a while.

Atleast I remember my best times in life, have not been when I had nothing to do. They in fact have been the worst to be honest. I think I have enjoyed the most when I stole sometime off the clock and done something worthwhile. Going for a non-scheduled trip, meeting new and interesting people while going around the city looking for sponsorships, doing ten things at one time and still stealing time from all of it to go out with friends. Its never been as fun when I was just sitting in my room and someone took me to a place that I really remember.

But it poses an interesting question: would I have had as much fun at all the stuff that I remember now, had I been free during that period?

I think not.

I think that we, as people, have this general tendency of being kleptomaniacs who want to steal time and do something different from what we are already busy with. I think that the enjoyment sort of increases when you are busy and that one would not enjoy even the most fun thing in the world if the person had nothing else to do in life besides being there. Also, the periods in life, where I have had nothing to do, have been like a dull blotch in my memory. Although when I am busy, I always think about how and when would I get free, but when I get free, I can never think of fun stuff to do. Its like when you have the exam the next day, your mind would think of the most brilliant plans, and before you can even walk out of the examination hall the next day, your brain is stripped out of the interesting ideas and left with the most boring and mundane ones.

The people around me, who I envy/admire the most, are the people who find time for everything. They steal time from their busy life and do something that I would have loved to do. I always admire their knack of being successful at what they are doing and also finding time for what they want to do in life. Their success, I think, lies in not doing what they are busy with brilliantly (heck, everybody is brilliant at what they do these days), but in managing to steal away time from those things and actually implement those plans that they think of when they are busy.

So the lesson my friend (Oh! there is a lesson too, you ask!!) is keep yourself busy. Do not aim for a life where you have nothing to do, instead look for things that will make you busy and test you. And if you are already busy, then make sure that you steal time to do the things that you want to do. Because only that, would truly make you happy, for there is no fun in being free when you were not busy anyways.

The Birthday Girl

Birthdays have been overrated in my opinion. Be it Harry Potter or Gandhi Jayanti, people have a fixation towards making a day represent a person's life or any big change in it. Perhaps as kids we are introduced to the concept of a birthday being special by ladening us with gifts. Back when I was in school, my parents had brought me up in a way to not expect any great gifts. So the only thing that made me wait for my birthday was the small celebration that happened in my class. Normally, in the class, the birthday kid would come in his or her favorite clothes and then the class would sing a birthday song for him and as a reward, he would distribute toffees to all the kids in the class. The bonus was that you could skip the boring class and go to distribute toffees to all the teachers in all the other classrooms with a friend who would assist you in this daunting task. Needless to say, the position of the assistant to the birthday boy was the most sought after. It was never the p

History Repeats

This play was an experiment for me and all others involved. It was my last semester and I was determined to do a play, a last play at IIT. I always wanted to do a play with my friends and my sophies prod experience was also very nice. I literally begged the Insti Dram secy for a slot in the annual prod and finally when he gave me a 10 minute slot, I prepared my play accordingly. From producing a great play, my focus went into producing a different one. I appreciate the level to which we have risen as far as dramatics at IIT Bombay is concerned. There is however a pattern to what we show in our plays, it is mostly some old man or a lunatic as one of the leading characters. In the annual prod itself, the two most appreciated plays had almost the same plotline. They both had chess as the common ground for the leading characters and both were basically comedies trying to hint at a larger issue. I have nothing against anybody and I applaud every effort by everyone, infact I was quite surpri
